How to Choose Free Software
A free download is only the beginning. The useful question is whether an application can complete your essential tasks without introducing costs or limitations you cannot accept.
Define the job before browsing
Write down three tasks you perform every week. Describe the result, not the button you currently click. For example, a designer might need layered artwork, editable text and print-ready output. This separates essential capabilities from familiar interface details.
Compare a realistic sample
Use a duplicate of a representative project. Open it, make an edit, save it, close the app and reopen it. Check whether layout, embedded assets and comments survived. Record every extra step so that a polished first impression does not hide recurring work.
Choose with an exit plan
Before committing, find out how to retrieve your data. Keep an independent backup and document the export process. If a tool only works while an account or server is available, decide how you will access important records during an outage.
