Software Compatibility: What to Test Before Switching
Compatibility includes more than whether a file opens. A reliable comparison checks editable content, collaborators, devices and the way work moves through your existing process.
Build a representative test set
Choose examples with tables, images, comments, links and any advanced features you use. Include large and older projects as well as a simple new file. Keep untouched originals so that you can compare results without risking active work.
Check a round trip
Open a copy in the candidate application, edit it and save it in a supported project format. Reopen it in the receiving application and inspect the result. Record lost formatting or behavior, and distinguish an acceptable visual change from the loss of editable information.
Include people and devices
Test the same task on the systems your team actually uses. Ask a collaborator to review permissions, comments and shared editing. Decide which limitations are acceptable and document a fallback for tasks that still require the old application.
